For the past two years, USAID LEAF’s Asia-Pacific Leadership Program on Gender and Climate Change has been supporting gender champions in six countries in the Asia-Pacific to develop their leadership skills and technical expertise in integrating gender into forestry and climate change programs. This week, over 25 Lao gender champions demonstrated their leadership at a workshop in Luang Prabang to develop a gender mainstreaming strategy and action plan for the Lao Department of Forestry. The workshop gathered decision makers, key managers and staff from the Department of Forestry, the Commission for Advancement of Women and the Lao Women’s Union to help strengthen the institutional environment of the department with an effective gender action plan that will result in improved program outcomes. Mr. Baoly Phaameaung, Deputy Director General at the Lao Department of Forestry, said, “The department is taking proactive steps and this workshop will support us by providing an action plan that guides us to systematically implement gender integration within the DOF’s programming.”
