Summary: Review of Papua New Guinea Forest and REDD+ Related Policy & Legislation

12 July 2014

Considerable potential exists in Papua New Guinea to raise forest management standards and reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation by improving implementation of existing laws, policies and regulations. To support implementation of Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation including conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+) amendments to the existing policy and legislative framework may also be necessary.

This report summarizes main issues in forest law and policy in Papua New Guinea with regard to integrating REDD+ and other forest carbon emissions reductions incentive initiatives, and suggests a number of legislative and regulatory reforms towards these ends.
